The story follows 10-year-old , a sullen girl moving to a new home. While taking a shortcut, her family stumbles into a mysterious, abandoned theme park that is actually a gateway to the spirit realm. After her parents are transformed into pigs for eating food meant for the gods, Chihiro must survive in a magical bathhouse for thousands of kami (spirits). If the bathhouse is the film’s engine, the train ride to Swamp Bottom is its soul. In the third act, Chihiro, No-Face, and Yubaba’s giant baby board a silent train that glides across a shallow sea. The visual is devastatingly beautiful: water so still it looks like oil, a lonely platform, and silhouettes of commuters who are also shadows.
