Samara Verified Access

Founded in 1586 as a fortress protecting the Volga trade route, Samara rose to prominence in the 19th and 20th centuries. During World War II, it served as the de facto alternative capital of the Soviet Union. The government, foreign embassies, and the Bolshoi Theater were evacuated here to protect them from the Nazi advance.
