Beyond the risks, there is a functional argument for legitimate software.

The websites that host keygens and cracked executables are rarely altruistic. "Crack chasers" frequently download files infected with trojans, keyloggers, and ransomware. Because CNC machines are often connected to shop networks, a malware infection on the control computer can spread to other computers on the network, compromising sensitive design files or client data.

The mindset is understandable: CNC machinery is expensive. Between the router table, motors, drivers, breakout boards, and tooling, the costs add up quickly. When faced with a licensing fee for Mach4 (which can range depending on the license type), the temptation to search for a torrent or a key-generator becomes strong.
