The Thing -2011-

In post-production, Universal Pictures panicked. They feared that the practical effects looked "dated" or "clunky" compared to contemporary CGI blockbusters. They demanded reshoots and extensive digital overhauls. The result is cinematic schizophrenia. In the final theatrical cut, you can see the seams. A shot will begin with a beautiful practical puppet, only for a digital "veneer" to be painted over it in post-production—smearing the detail, smoothing the textures, and removing the weight.

When you watch it, do so with a fan edit. Several dedicated fans have restored much of ADI’s original practical effects footage, stripping away the CGI veneer. In those fan edits, you get a glimpse of the masterpiece this film could have been. The Thing -2011-
