After the release of The Chronicles of Riddick in 2004, the franchise seemed stalled. The second film was a commercial disappointment, despite its ambitious world-building. For years, Vin Diesel and writer/director David Twohy fought to revive the character. Eventually, they struck a deal with Universal Studios: Diesel would regain the rights to the character in exchange for a cameo in Fast & Furious series, and the studio would allow a lower-budget third film to be made independently.
