While the 2011 film uses CGI for environmental destruction (the crumbling house finale), the vampire transformations and deaths are delightfully goopy. Vampires don't turn to dust here; they melt into a sulfurous, yellow puddle of goo. When a vampire is staked, their body deflates like a grotesque balloon. The animatronics and prosthetics give the violence a weight that CG blood splatter often lacks.

Where the 2011 film succeeds is in its efficiency. The pacing is relentless.
