On the surface, putting the same key in 100 million consoles sounds like a security disaster waiting to happen. In hindsight, it was. But in 2005, Nintendo's reasoning was rational:

Why didn't Nintendo use asymmetric cryptography (public/private keys) for everything? Speed. Decrypting game data on the fly during gameplay requires blistering speed. AES-128 symmetric decryption is computationally light and fast. Asymmetric crypto (like RSA) is slow and was reserved for verifying signatures, not bulk data decryption.
